Context

I redesigned remote control apps for different TV models, for people who lost their TV remote or prefer controlling their TV through their phone

The Problem

Early user drop-off during the initial connection flow

User Insights

User emails revealed that many couldn’t find or connect to their TV

Solution

1 Clarifying Permissions

😕 Assumption

Users didn’t understand why the app requested so many permissions, which felt overwhelming and untrustworthy.

💡 What we did

We’re currently redesigning the remote itself to make it more comfortable and intuitive to use. to increase the chance users would approve.

2 Improving the Discovery Screen

😕 Problem

Users didn’t understand why their TV wasn’t showing up, or why they couldn’t connect.

💡 What we did

Improved the discovery screen by separating saved vs available devices, clarifying permission states, adding persistent help, and switching to passive background scanning.

3 Building a Help Center

😕 Problem

Setting up full analytics would take time, but we needed quick insight into user issues.

💡 What we did

Created a Help Center to help users and collect insights on where they got stuck.

Now in process

We’re currently redesigning the remote itself to make it more intuitive to use.
